Institutions
Territorial Administration:
The various "territorial administrative subdivisions of the Republic" as defined in article 72 of the French Constitution, (revised on 28 March 2003) are as follows:
♦ Communes (a total of 36,778);
♦ Départements (96), plus the 4 overseas départements (DOM) (Guadeloupe, Guyane, Martinique and La Réunion);
♦ Regions (22), plus the 4 overseas regions (ROM) (Guadeloupe, Guyane, Martinique and La Réunion);
♦ Local Authorities with a particular status, notably the island of Corsica;
♦ Overseas Local Authorities: Mayotte, Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, the Wallis and Futuna islands, French Polynesia...

Only the first three of these territorial subdivisions concern directly the inhabitants of Lille.
